Mesmer/Elementalist... Needs toughening up.
I've just deleted 1 of my post-sear characters so I could try Mesmer/Elementalist. It's VERY hard work trying to solo in pre-sear compared to what my other characters were able to do.
What's a good weapon to use for a mesmer?
Here's her attributes/skills
Fast casting 2
Illusion Magic 2
Domination Magic 4
Inspiration Magic 1
Air Magic 2
Empathy, Ether Feast, Imagined Burden, Aura of Restoration, Lightening Javelin, Firestorm, Glyph of Lesser Energy, Blinding Flash.
Weapons: Deadly Cesta 6-8 + 20%, Divine Symbol Energy +3, Health -20
I'm only at level 5 in pre and feel like giving up with mesmer...
Help Thanks in advance.
Mike.

Mesmers are hard at the beginning because you are given skills across many attribute lines. More if you want to factor in your secondary.
My advice is to really just about ignore your secondary until you reach the point where you can change secondaries or are making builds specific to the area. When I did my meses, I concentrated on domination to start. Put as many points as you can into dom, then fast cast and the rest into whatever else you have skills for that would be beneficial.
Elementalist as a secondary causes a lot of hit on your energy and you won't be as effective as you would like and you will get frustrated. Empathy will do you a lot of good early in the game as well as energy burn.
Don't give up until you have reach post sear and can start getting some more quests and skills. You will be able to pick and choose to fill out a more concentrated skill line and start specializing in your tasks.
Weapon isn't as important. Use something that gives you a lot of energy (staff with 15 as soon as you can, and something with faster recharge.) Faster cast isn't as important as you can get point into fast casting. A good cheap green to start out with is the one from tombs with 10/10 until you can get something specialized for your build.

I'd concentrate on just Illusion and Inspiration magic in pre-sear and ignore the other attributes.
As for skills, I'd mainly use Conjure Phantasm and Ether Feast. In reserve I'd bring in Aura of Restoration for extra healing and a Glyph of Lesser Energy -> Imaginary Burden combo for kiting. The rest of the skills I'd ignore for the time being.
For weapons I'd use the best wand and focus I could get, or maybe a wand and no-req shield for a little more AL (you can get up to AL8 without a req)

In all honesty, being level is plenty good enough to start into the regular game. You don't need to loiter around pre-searing for too long at all. As well, if you have money on your other characters, just get your mesmer run everywhere and power-levelled.

I'm not sure how you found pre-searing so difficult with a mes! I started a Mes in pre-sear last week and found it pretty easy to wander around solo.
I used put most Attributes into Domination and Illusion and then used Empathy on melee creatures and Backfire on casters, covering both with Phantasm. Ether Feast and Energy Tap were used to keep health and energy levels up.
Infact, I left pre-searing at lvl 5 and the 4 vs 4 battle thingy (which still confuses me) I was with 3 hench and the other team had 4 players. I beat them!
Kiting is avoiding damage through movement.

Elrodien gave a pretty good definition on kiting.
When kiting a ranger (shooting arrows, not counting thumpers), go behind obstacles. When kiting a warrior, run away from the warrior and turn around if he's going to hit you anyway.

1) If the OP is having a hard time in Pre-Sear, I'm not sure it's really all that smart to suggest going to post-sear before levelling up a bit more?
2) Take Cirians advice.
But... Mesmers can't tank, and mesmers have really sucky self-heal, and only start getting decent spells in the South Shiverpeaks; eles can tank, but also have sucky self-heal and their damage output goes from decent to poor in the course of the game. Basically you have chosen a combination of an "annoyance-class" and a support class, a combination which is among the more difficult to play, and is really more useful in PvP than in PvE.
It's not at all an impossible combination, but you'll find it harder going than if you pick any combination which includes monk or necromancer as either primary or secondary.

Note this is for the early game! posted this in the wrong thread sorry for the repeat
Cronic reroller here, but I have taken 6 builds up to level 9 , and so far Mes/Ele was the easiest to PVE level.
Sink points in Illusion then split fast cast and Domin and 3 or so in fire
1) Aura of Restoration - Keep this up all the time -Heals everytime you cast
2) Conjure Phantasm - Health degen uses your Illusion
3) Empathy - Health hit every time they attack
4) Firestorm - If to many get to close
5) Ether Feast - Emergency heal
6) Energy Tap - vs casters or if energy low
7) Revive
8) Backfire - vs casters
Basically keep Aura up for healing yourself
Noncasters stick 2 and 3 on them and let them kill themselves
Casters - start with 8 then 6 then 2
If they zerg you lay a firestorm on them
If the fight is prolonged use some taps

Also, if you're looking to use your Ele side when you get out of Pre Sear, I suggest Air. It has very few spells that cause exhaustion and can be used with very little fast casting points required due to its already fast casts.
If you use even 3 Air spells, you probably wont need more than 7 fast cast for most of the game.
